Storage Costs

Storage charges are reviewed annually. For the period Oct 2011-Sep 2012 charging is based on the cost of new sas & sata disk purchased in Summer 2011 & tape media required. Other overheads (there are many - see below) are absorbed by CiCS.

Storage is charged in units of *usable* 250GB on a per annum basis.

There are many hidden "overheads" eg, a 500GB disk has a raw capacity of 414 GB when put in a filer. Disks are grouped into RAID arrays with parity disks & spares. Some storage vendors refer to 1MB & mean 1,000,000 bytes rather than 1,048,576 bytes. Storage charges are based on the latter convention (which is how systems are administered !)

The charges are based on cost of media over a 6 year life cycle.
