Storage Costs
(Previous years figures 2010-2011 & 2009-2010 in brackets)
- Type A: £620 per TB per annum (£800, £2000)
- Type B: £360 per TB per annum (£450, £1100)
- Type C: £300 per TB per annum (£400, £1000)
- Type D: £260 per TB per annum (£350, £900)
- Type A**: £1140 per TB per annum (£2900, n/a)
- Type A*: £900 per TB per annum (£1850, n/a)
Storage charges are reviewed annually. For the period Oct 2011-Sep 2012 charging is based on the cost of new sas & sata disk purchased in Summer 2011 & tape media required. Other overheads (there are many - see below) are absorbed by CiCS.
Storage is charged in units of *usable* 250GB on a per annum basis.
There are many hidden "overheads" eg, a 500GB disk has a raw capacity of 414 GB when put in a filer. Disks are grouped into RAID arrays with parity disks & spares. Some storage vendors refer to 1MB & mean 1,000,000 bytes rather than 1,048,576 bytes. Storage charges are based on the latter convention (which is how systems are administered !)
The charges are based on cost of media over a 6 year life cycle.
The charges do not take account of the following:
- Software Purchase/License/Maintenance costs for Filers.
- Software Purchase/License/Maintenance costs for Servers.
- Software Purchase/License/Maintenance costs for Tape Backup Engines.
- Hardware Filer Head Node Purchase/Maintenance.
- Hardware Purchase/Maintenance costs for Tape Backup Engines.
- Hardware Purchase/Maintenance costs for Servers.
- Network Connectivity costs.
- Environmental costs (eg power, space).
- CiCS staff operational time.
