Software licensing overview

CiCS stocks software items under a range of licensing agreements, which determine who may buy and use the software, and where it may be used. Some items are 'site-licensed' and can be used on any number of computers on campus; others are licensed separately for each computer.

All software is for use by members of the University only. You may not pass copies to anyone else. Legal action against you and the University may ensue if you don't comply with licensing conditions.

Possible licence terms:

Use on: One specific computer
Home computer or laptop belonging to the main user of the above (secondary use)
A set number of computers at any one time (concurrent licence)
Campus network
Any number of computers
Use where: On campus
At home
Anywhere in the UK
Any location
Use by: Staff
Students
Any member of the University
A single member of the University
Use for: Work purposes
Personal purposes
Use until: Member leaves the University
Perpetual licence

Don't assume the same conditions apply to different products. Check the licence summary on the media label or pricelist, and understand the conditions for each item. Reception or Helpdesk can provide clarification.

You can buy site-licensed software relatively cheaply, because CiCS pays an annual fee. Individual software licences are considerably more expensive, but still represent an educational discount.
