Microsoft Campus Agreement summary
The University uses mainstream Microsoft (MS) software under the Microsoft Campus Agreement rental scheme. The annual rent is paid centrally, and allows specific products to be shared between computers on University premises.
Loan, lease, sale, gift or other transfer of software to non-qualifying people or organisations is prohibited. This is made clear on all labelling, and publicised regularly.
Agreement included software
- MS Office Standard, Professional and Macintosh versions. See the link to Office versions and contents.
- MS Project
- MS Visual Studio Professional, containing Visual Basic, C++, Java, Interdev, Foxpro and associated software tools.
- MS Windows upgrades (or downgrades) to any version. Upgrades are so-called because the PC must already have an earlier MS operating system, not because they lack anything.
- MS Backoffice client access licences (CALs), including client access for Windows Server and Terminal Server
- Older versions, and foreign language versions of these products
Excluded software
- Visio
- All server products - SQL Server, BackOffice etc.
- Any other software not specifically included
Individual (single-machine) licences for these excluded products may be available, to University departments only, under the Microsoft Select Scheme (see link).
Information CDs and all game titles are only available commercially and not under any University deals.
Who may use the software, and where?
On campus use:
- All staff and students may use the Campus Agreement software on campus only, on networked or stand-alone PCs or Macs.
Off campus use:
- CiCS Campus Agreement software, displaying the University crest may no longer be bought for off-campus use.
- Eligible staff may buy Microsoft Work @ Home media from the Computing Centre Reception (see link for qualifying criteria). Students may not use this media, even though it is labelled 'Student Media'.
- Students may buy Microsoft software via the Viglen Student Portal (see link).
Buying the software
Although Campus Agreement software may be used on any University PC on the campus, CiCS must carry out all copying, and distribution must follow proper procedures. We are required to keep records of distribution and our labelling explains the terms and conditions of use.
You only have to buy the media (CD or DVD), as software covered by this campus-wide agreement has no individual licences. You do not need a media set per PC, but as the software sometimes has to refer back to the original, it is important that each PC has easy access to a set.
To order software, please follow the link to the Campus Agreement pricelist.
