Extended Warranty

Extended warranty is strongly recommended. The first year of on-site maintenance is usually included in the price.

CiCS PC Workshop

The CiCS PC workshop repairs Viglen and some other machines that are not covered by extended warranty.

Equipment can be collected from and delivered to your office on the daily van run. How quickly your equipment will be returned to you depends on how busy the workshop is. 8-12 hours is the minimum turn-round time. A charge is made for parts, unless the machine is under warranty. A departmental order to cover any spare parts is required with every repair job. Labour is free for PC repair work.

If you have a hardware fault contact the Helpdesk for assistance - if your equipment needs to be picked up they'll arrange it.

National Printer and PC Maintenance Contract

Xenon is the recommended company providing on-site maintenance for any make of PC or printer. Their prices start at aound £25 per annum for a PC or a printer, including laptops and moderate-sized printers. Small inkjet printers cost even less. The response time is usually the next day and the machine will be fixed on the spot for over 80% of calls. If this is not possible it will either be repaired within a further 8 hours or replaced with an equivalent item. Only limited help can be given with the transfer of software and data.

Security and Insurance

Cable locks may be sufficient to prevent opportunist theft but security enclosures (steel clamps) that bolt to the top or side of a desk, or are secured by strong cable, are more effective in preventing your PC from being stolen.

On the University computer insurance policy the excess for PCs is £500 per incident when approved clamps are used, otherwise it is £2,500. Basic insurance is automatically covered by the University's general policy, but it only covers computer theft which is clearly associated with a break-in (ie not sneak theft). For this basic cover, simply add details of new computers (with serial numbers) to your inventory.
