What is malware?
Malware (malicious software) is the term used to describe any software designed to carry out malicious activity on a users computer. Types of malware include adware, spyware, viruses and trojans.
Malware is frequently used to carry out the following malicious activities:
- Get your personal information
- Install unwanted software
- Modify your computers settings
- Display offensive pop-ups or advertising
- Reinstall and replicate themselves and other programs
Malware is also used to intercept passwords or credit card details stored on or entered into your computer
Reducing the risk of infection
- Practice general good computer security - see safer computing link
- Only install legitimate software from reliable sources
- Enable the Windows Firewall - see Windows Firewall link
- Install anti-spyware software, update and run regularly*
- Install antivirus software and ensure it is kept up to date
