Responsibilities

Management of CiCS accounts including budgets, procurement and income
Management of software licences held by CiCS, both for the department and site licences on behalf of the University
Moderation and development of broadcast email and myAnnouncements messaging services
General management tasks for the department, including SRDS, reports etc
Joint Safety officer for CiCS (with Ian Knowles) with an interest in computer ergonomics
Specific projects as necessary

Biography

After a degree in Electronics here at Sheffield, and a spell discovering that I didn´t have the single-mindedness to be a successful researcher, I joined Academic Computing Services in 1978. There was one mainframe computer and my first task was to look at how the University might use the new technology – microprocessors. The first Personal Computers appeared soon after that and for many years I ran a small subsection of the department to support them. Eventually the mainframe (almost) disappeared and the rest is history.

My other main activity is as Treasurer to Sheffield Credit Union, a co-operative non-profit organisation providing savings and loans services. This is really for anyone, but especially those who don´t have access to mainstream banking and financial services. We provide a lot of money advice and emergency loans. My role demands a variety of skills including IT, common sense and tact.

I´m married with three grown-up children and I lke to get away from it all in a tent.
