Biography

I worked as an electrician when I left school, but became interested in computing and electronics after a project commissioning a winding engine and watching The Computer Programme on the BBC.

After a short spell testing control systems for rolling mills, my next job was as a field service engineer for Modcomp, a minicomputer vendor, specialising in real-time applications. It was our kit that drove the trading screens during the Big Bang at the London Stock Exchange in 1986. It's no fun wondering around the square mile at 3 o'clock in the morning fault finding! We also supported international clients and I flew around the world, stopping off at some weird and wonderful places.

I have worked at the University since 1995.
