Responsibilities
- Take responsibility for the theatre’s sound and communications installations and advise the Theatre Manager on current sound practices and latest sound technologies.
- Supervise the setting up and dismantling of sound, lighting, staging and seating for productions, allocating tasks when necessary. Provide solutions to problems arising during this work. Ensure good working practice at all times in accordance with the Drama Studio and University Codes of Practice for Health and Safety.
- Devise, schedule and deliver in conjunction with the Theatre Manager, training in sound, lighting, stage rigging, stage and production management, technical direction, set construction and general theatre practice to key technical and back stage production personnel.
- Advise key technical personnel on all aspects of presentation and production such as sound design, lighting and set design; rigging techniques; production of plans and risk assessments.
- Undertake a daily inspection, identify and bring to the attention of the Theatre Manager any areas of the theatre, its installation and equipment that are defective. Effect repairs where appropriate and maintain the theatre and its environment in a clean and tidy state.
- Ensure through liaison with Theatre Manager and conducting appropriate tests and inspections that the Drama Studio is maintained as a safe and secure working environment, in accordance with legal requirements.
- Regularly inspect, test and repair as necessary, the Drama Studio’s lighting, sound, scenic and rigging equipment.
- Maintain adequate stocks of consumables for the needs of the theatre and users. In consultation with the Theatre Manager, order and or advise on new equipment.
- Maintain records of testing and equipment for insurance, legal and other purposes.
- In conjunction with the Theatre Manager, run the general office; maintain Theatre and Rehearsal Studio booking diaries and answer telephone and public enquiries.
- Provide back up cover, when necessary, for Duty Manager or Duty Fire Officer duties across all the venues.
- Provide technical support for events in other University performance venues.
