Role Definitions

1. Technical Strategy

Role: Role Definition: To oversee the creation of a strategy which will guide the technical direction of the department. To ensure that new developments take place in the context of the strategy. To put in place a process for continual review of the strategy.

Scope: All technological developments taking place on the University Network.

Includes: Desktops; servers; networking and computing infrastructure; telephony; any other devices connecting to the network.

2. Research Support

Role: To create a framework and policy for the support of computing-based research activity. To set in place a fair and transparent set of tariffs for F.E.C.

Scope: All computer-based research activities.

Includes: HPC, Grid computing, RTP programme.

3. Funding Management

Role: To set in place procedures to allow CiCS to take advantage of appropriate and relevant external funding opportunities.

Scope: HE Funding and commercial partnering opportunities.

Includes: JISC, HFCE, Sun Microsystems, Microsoft, researching, preparing cases, and bidding
for funding.

4. Technology Futures

Role: Role Definition: To ensure that CiCS keeps up-to-date with technological developments and has a mechanism for integrating new technologies with current working practices.

Scope: Developments in Information technologies, computing and networking.

Includes: New information paradigms, green technologies, server and desktop environments, new
application software and development methods, networking.

6. Resource Management

Role: Overseeing the institution of a common set of procedures for the realistic allocation of human resource.

Scope: All human resourcing within Technical Services section.

Includes: Project resource allocation, ,line management resource allocation, costing.
