The CCL is funded by one of the first of the EPRSC's Portfolio Partnership awards. The funding is in the area of Advanced Ceramics, Polymers and Composites; and it represents the consolidation of 17 separate EPSRC-funded programmes into a single award.

The award provides the 9 academic investigators in the CCL with guaranteed underpinning research funding for 5 years.

Flexibility of direction

The Portfolio Partnership award allows us the flexibility to adapt our research programmes to the latest developments in our own laboratories and elsewhere. Thus "hot topics" can be pursued quickly by diverting resources from other projects without making grant applications.

The range of research interests covered by the CCL is very wide. These include:

  • The measurement of stress fields in polymer matrix fibre composites.
  • Characterising the electrical microstructure of electroceramics.
  • Development of novel chalcogenide glasses.
  • Development of novel polymer electrolytes for lithium batteries.
  • New barium titanate based electroceramics.
  • Improvements in carbon-containing refractory castables.
  • New piezo electric and dielectric ceramics.
  • Solid electrolytes.
