Biological & Bioprocess Engineering

Biological & Bioprocess engineering is a branch of engineering where the core engineering design principles of measurement, modelling and manufacture are applied to complex biological systems, underpinning a new “systems biology”. The fundamental challenge is to utilise and integrate genomic-level information to explain and predict the behaviour of complex biological systems.

Applications are diverse, and include essentially any healthcare, environmental and life science problem. Within healthcare, applications include such areas as cell therapies and tissue engineering, gene therapy and novel manufacturing approaches for proteins and biopharmaceuticals.

Bioprocess engineering is a crucial part of the biotechnology/biopharmaceutical sector. Biopharmaceuticals contribute a significant proportion of drugs in development, including recombinant protein therapeutics. Bioprocess engineering is an area that is seen to be pivotal for the future success of modern medicine.
