Biography
I obtained a First Class Honours BSc in Chemistry then a PhD in Liquid Crystal Chemistry from the University of Sheffield before moving to Hull University first as a post-doc, then as Lecturer in Organic Chemistry. I held the Thorn EMI Lectureship for three years then the DERA Lectureship for four years. I made the transition to Chemical Engineering at Sheffield in 2000 as a Senior Lecturer, being awarded a Personal Chair in 2006. I was EPSRC Senior Media Fellow from 2006-2009 working with TV and radio stations on sports engineering.
My research interests are carbon dioxide capture & utilisation (CCU), supported catalysts for use in continuous flow processes and snowsports engineering. I won the 2006 Hanson Medal from the IChemE for a paper on a new self-waxing ski system. This has led to further collaborations with major ski companies.
In the field of CCU, I am Chair of the EPSRC Grand Challenge Network “CO2Chem” and co-author of a policy document on CCU which was published in 2011.
