Sheffield Visits SHELL

A group of 3rd and 4th year students recently visited Shell’s Stanlow oil refinery near Chester.

The day started with a visit to the Innovation Park to learn about the engine developments that Shell are pioneering. The highlight was changing the tyre on last year's winning Ferrari Formula 1 car. In a competition with a team from Birmingham, the Sheffield students were most successful posting a time of about 3 seconds.

The tour then moved into the refinery and the workings of one of the largest refineries in the UK were shown. The views from the top of the cracking unit were breathtaking.

It was a long and interesting day out, giving a good picture of the applications of chemical engineering.
