CBE students receive SCI Travel Bursaries

Two postgraduate research students from the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Sheffield were chosen from many applicants to receive travel bursaries from the Society for Chemical Industry.

Miss Ei Leen Chan and Mr Kimiaki Washino were awarded Richardson Bursar grants from the Society for Chemical Industry. These grants are offered to candidates working in the general field of research and development in process engineering, process chemistry and related topics for attendance at a conference or for the purpose of visiting a relevant institution.

Miss Ei Leen Chan presenting her poster

Ei Lee Chan used her bursary to attend the World Student Conference on Particle Technology, held in Delft, Netherlands, from 22 - 25 April 2010.

The conference specifically catered to students in the particle technology research field, featuring several leading academics of the field who presented keynote lectures on the recent progress in key areas of particle technology and further developments. The main theme was nanoparticles, an advancing research area particularly its application in the biology and medicinal field. Of particular interest was the noteworthy and illuminating keynote lecture, delivered by Professor M J Hounslow, Pro-Vice-Faculty of Engineering, describing the prediction of granule growth in a fluidised bed granulator using population balance models.

Along with three other colleagues from the Particle Products research group from the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Sheffield (James Osborne, Ranjitkumar Dhenge and Xavier Mesnier), Ei Leen presented a poster on her work: 'Impeller Stress Characterisation for High Shear Granulation: Model Validation'.

Mr Kimiaki Washino

Kimiaki Washino used his bursary to attend The World Congress on Particle Technology (WCPT) 6 was held in Nuremberg, Germany from 26 - 29 April 2010. The WCPT is held every four years and is one of the largest events relating to powder and particle technology to take place.

Kimiaki's oral presentation was given in the session of Modelling and Simulations – Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), on the first day of the conference. The topic of the presentation was a new numerical model mainly designed for wet granulation and coating processes.
