The University of Sheffield
Chemical and Biological Engineering

New name for the Department

At the recent meeting of the University Senate, it was agreed that the Department will change its name to "The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering" with effect from August 2010. We are not changing the names of our courses. The new website will be: www.sheffield.ac.uk/cbe

This represents a new chapter for the Department, and recognises that the future for chemical engineering, both academically and industrially, involves engagement with the life sciences. We do not seek to lose our core values as
chemical engineers, but rather bring biological activities into the department as well, and to use our core chem eng skills also to solve problems involving biological systems. We will seek in tandem to grow our existing strengths in
the Department. Key strategic issues such as energy and the environment and the development of new products/processes will involve engineering application of principles from both the chemical sciences and the biological sciences.

Chemical engineers are ideally placed to do this.

I think this is an exciting development, and will enable us at Sheffield to substantially broaden our impact, and to maintain our leading role.
