Universities Business Challenge 2004

the business challenge 2004 team

The first-round competition consisted of 5 trading periods between 20th October and 3rd December. The team played the role of business consultant for a brewery company, George Windmill Company, in a simulated business world. The aim of the game was to achieve maximum profits through the sales of 2 alcohol products within this period.

We competed with 7 teams from institutions such as Imperial College, Regent Business School and Bristol University. The outcome of our first trading period was not satisfactory with the loss of 7 million which ranked us at the bottom of the table due to unreasonably high selling prices. However, due to our team’s creativity and bravery we managed to come very close to qualifying for the semi-finals. We borrowed heavily, sold our products extremely cheap in mass volume and eventually recorded a profit of 10 million within 3 trading periods.

In conclusion, UBC is a very interesting game to play. We have had lots of fun with it although we did not qualify for the semi-finals. We encourage all Sheffield students to join the game next year because it is definitely worth the time and effort!
