Friday 26 August 2011
There were 71 students registered on the MSc(Eng) Environmental and Energy Engineering programme in 2010-11. This specialist course runs for eleven months each year. A major part of the course is the research project. At the end of the course students submit their dissertations and present their research as posters.
Posters are an important method for communicating scientific research and present students with specific challenges in presenting a coherent and visually attractive summary of their research.
To mark the final day of the course the MSc students present their posters for assessment, and to enable fellow students, staff and guests an opportunity to discuss the research projects.
On Friday 26 August 2011 the posters were presented in the Ideas Space. As well as students and staff, members of the Energy Institute attended along with guests from industry. Over a buffet lunch the posters were viewed, discussed and judged. The top three posters were awarded prizes by the Yorkshire Branch of the Energy Institute.
The judges praised the high quality of research carried out and, after much discussion, awarded the prizes to:
1st Prize: Yang Meng - Granulation applications in food industrial waste
2nd Prize: Rajlaxmi Nayak - Biofuels from micro algae: extraction of lipids using osmotic shock
3rd Prize: Tianyi Yang - Power production from coal and straw
The prizes were presented by Dr Mohammad Zandi, Chair of the Energy Institute Yorkshire Branch.
