Taste of Work
TASTE of WORK has now finished for the academic year 2011-2012.
Registrations for 2012-13 will open in Semester 1 2012.
What is TASTE of WORK?
TASTE of WORK is a new initiative, brought to you by the Careers Service at the University of Sheffield. TASTE of WORK offers a single, bitesize (c3-4 hr) taster session within a University department or the Students’ Union. Tasters are available in a range of sectors including:
- Retail
- Customer Service*
- Hospitality
- Admin
- Finance
- Manual work*
(*Students applying for these areas have the opportunity to undertake two tasters on consecutive weeks - one week theory, one week practice. Some are based at The Edge, Endcliffe Village)
You can apply to take part in Taste of Work if:
- You are a current student at the University of Sheffield
- You are looking for a part-time job but have not yet found work
- You do not have previous work experience
- You are able to commit to complete the session offered to you (the date will be agreed in advance)
When is TASTE of WORK taking place?
If this sounds like you, please register by completing the application form available at the right hand side of the page. PLEASE NOTE: YOU MUST HAVE YOUR NEW SEMESTER 2 TIMETABLE, AND YOU MUST REGISTER FROM AN ON-CAMPUS COMPUTER. Please be as flexible as possible with your availability and your choice of sectors, as this will make it more likely that you will be matched to a TASTE of WORK.
TASTE of WORK will run from mid February until the Easter vacation, and for 3 weeks after Easter.
What are the benefits of taking part in TASTE of WORK?
- You will gain some work experience and skills in a real work situation
- You will build your confidence in the workplace
- You will have the opportunity to observe staff undertaking key aspects of their job
- You gain experience to add to your CV when looking for part time or temporary work
- You will receive a certificate which you can show to employers when job hunting
What will you do on your TASTE of WORK?
Each bitesize TASTE of WORK session lasts for approximately 3-4 hours and during that time you will learn the various aspects of a particular role. Please note that sometimes you will be able to undertake the work yourself (practical skills), for other duties you will observe regular members of staff as they operate (work shadowing).
Ready to apply? Please read on...
Before you make your application, please ensure that you read our Terms and Conditions and Expectations for the Day and details of the Dress Code Guidelines (see downloads on the right-hand side). Remember - TASTE of WORK is primarily aimed at students with no previous work experience. The number of places is limited and we cannot guarantee that places will be offered to all applicants - the more flexible your timetable and your choice of sectors the more likely we will be able to match you to a suitable slot.
