Careers Service

Research Students

The Careers Service and Research and Innovation Services have formed a partnership to ensure that you have access to the support that you need in order to make a successful transition from your research degree to the next stage of your career. There are, of course, other people in the University, particularly your supervisors and other academic colleagues, who can help you to plan your career and you should take full advantage of all the help that is available to you.

Getting started

The links and downloads listed in the menu on the right will provide you with a good introduction to career planning and explain more fully how the Careers Service can help you.

Specialist support

We have two careers advisers who specialise in working with researchers. They offer:

Individual careers consultations

If you need individual information or advice, you can book to have a 30 minute interview with one of the careers advisers. This will take place at the Dainton Graduate Research Centre and you can book by calling reception at the GRC on 0114 222 7611/2
or email: ddpportal@sheffield.ac.uk

If necessary, you will be able at the end of the interview to book a further, possibly longer, session with an adviser.

General support

Careers information

The Careers Service is located at 388 Glossop Road, near the Students’ Union, and if you visit us you will find a wide range of information resources. If you can’t find exactly what you want, members of our experienced information team will be happy to help you.

Generic careers advice

If, for any reason, you are not able to book an appointment on one of the days when an adviser is available at the GRC, or if you feel that you have an enquiry which can be resolved fairly quickly, you can book one of the twenty minute appointments with a careers adviser or CV assistant that are offered every day at the Careers Service. You won’t necessarily be seen at that point by one of the two specialist advisers, but the person that you meet will be able to refer you to a specialist adviser if that seems appropriate.

Email Enquiry Service

If you want it difficult to arrange a face-to-face appointment (e.g. because you are a part-time researcher, or because you are carrying out fieldwork) you can access our Email Enquiry Service via our website.

What's on

Throughout the year, the Careers Service offers a number of events aimed at the whole student body, including PGRs. As well as talks on specific careers, these include a range of events at which you can meet employers and find out what they have to offer.
