Professor Charlie Brooker
Charlie Brooker: PhD, MSc (Survey Methods), BA (Hons), RN (Mental Health), Dip N Ed, RNT, ENB cc No 650 (Adult Behavioural Psychotherapy)
Professional Background
Trained as a mental health nurse at the Maudsley/Bethlem hospitals in the 1970s before going on to advanced clinical training in adult behavioural psychotherapy. Worked as a behavioural nurse psychotherapist, community mental health nurse, planner/researcher in the NHS before undertaking a diploma in education at the former Southbank Polytechnic.
Academic background
Obtained an undergraduate degree in the social sciences specialising in psychology, criminology and social research methods. Pursued postgraduate research training at City University where he obtained an MSc in Social Survey Methods. His thesis was the first systematic national survey of community mental health nurses undertaken in the UK. First post in Higher Education was as a senior lecturer in the former Sheffield Hallam University where he obtained research funding from the Department of Health to undertake a PhD full-time under the supervision of Professors David Goldberg and Tony Butterworth at the University of Manchester.
Present Academic Post
He is Professor of Mental Health in the Mental Health Section at ScHARR where he has just stood down as the first head of section. He leads a research group in the mental health cluster entitled `Innovation in Mental Health Services´. He is honorary professor of mental health at the Institute of Psychiatry (http://www.iop.kcl.ac.uk/iopweb/departments/home/default.aspx?locator=4), was until recently co-chair of the Nursing Advisory group in the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMHE) and secretary to the PSI Implementation Group within NIMHE.
Current Research Interests
There are three main aspects to his current research interests:
- the evaluation of new mental health services
- the evaluation of education and training in mental health
- research in the field of prison mental health.

Consultancy
Consultancy activity is of ever increasing economic and strategic importance to University Departments and Centres. It enhances relationships with key customers whilst affording consultants the opportunity to remain abreast of changes in health service delivery and policy.
A record of my recent consultancy work is provided below. My customers over the past 10 years have been diverse and include; Government Departments (notably the Home Office, NHS Executive and Department of Health), a large number of Trusts (both inside and outside Trent and North West Regions) and the Royal Colleges of Nursing and Psychiatry. The bulk of my consultancy work has been obtained through my specialist professional background in mental health.
- Leicester Community and Mental Health Services Trust (1999) Produced an option appraisal report for the implementation of evidence-based practice across the all settings.
- Independent Review at North Lakelands Community Trust (1999-2000) Commissioned as a member of an external review panel examining allegations of brutality against members of staff working with patients with dementia.
- Trent Region (2001) Assessment of the continuing need for PSI training in South Yorkshire Mental Health Trusts (with Karen Lind).
- Tameside and Glossop Priority Services Trust (1999-2004) Evaluated a newly-established integrated psychosis service including: early intervention in primary health care; a community-based rehabilitation team, and acute in-patient services.
