BMS6052 - Laboratory Research Project (60 credits)
Module Co-ordinator: Dr. Marcelo Rivolta
Aims
The module aims to provide students with experience of laboratory research and develop their practical and organizational skills required for a career in science. Students undertake a project which reflects the research activities in the Department. Projects will run in the laboratories of the research groups and although students will have contact with various staff, each student will have an identified member of staff as their project supervisor. Students will gain experience of experimental design and execution and in the collation, interpretation and presentation of data. Assessment of the project will be based on; a written report, laboratory performance, delivery and defence of an oral presentation, a poster presentation and an oral examination.
Content
Students will work independently, under the supervision of an academic member of staff. However, they will also be expected to interact with other members of the laboratory and take part in any other group activities such as journal clubs and laboratory meetings. Students will be required to meet with supervisors at regular intervals to ensure satisfactory progress.
Objectives
Some objectives will be specific to the type of project undertaken. However, all students will be able to:
- assess relevant literature.
- perform relevant laboratory procedures.
- formulate research questions.
- apply current knowledge to novel situations.
- evaluate their own work in relation to published information.
- produce a written report.
- prepare a poster presentation.
- present an oral report.
Teaching Methods
Laboratory sessions, one-to-one tutorial sessions, discussions with laboratory members, journal clubs.
Assessment
6000 word project/dissertation 60%
Laboratory work 25%
Poster/oral presentation with oral examination 15%
