Student Representation Opportunities

The University places great value on the opinions of its students and there are numerous opportunities for you to get involved to have your say and also to represent the views of other students.  These opportunities are supplemented by a range of surveys and evaluations which you will be invited to participate in.

What student representation opportunities are available?

In the department - Staff Student Committee

We have a staff-student committee comprising of student representatives together with relevant academic staff.  Getting involved will enable you to join in discussions and decision making ranging across such topics as:

Dr. Penny Rashbass is the Secretary of the staff-student committee and will provide more information on the arrangements for the department’s staff-student committee.  This year Stephen Chadwick (a Level 3 student in Biomedical Science) is Chair of the Student-Staff Committee.  We also work closely with the Union Link representative who also sits on the Student-Staff Committee.

The Academic Diary and Student Handbook also contains information about student representation opportunities and the University of Sheffield’s Code of Practice for student course representatives provides guidance on the role and responsibilities of staff-student committee members:  http://www.lets.dept.shef.ac.uk/flats/student_course_reps.pdf

Our Faculty of Science

There are reserved places for students on a range of faculty-level committees you can get involved in:

This is rewarding work which will build your communications skills, offer you the opportunity for valuable networking and contribute to your personal development with skills to put on your CV.

The University is undergoing an exciting period of development with new staff posts and new Faculty structures being put in place.  These changes will take some time to implement.  We will highlight opportunities as they come up, or you could contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies directly.

The Biomedical Science Society

The Society organises a variety of social and academic events with the aim of encouraging the development of relations both between students and between staff and students.  Funding is from individual subscription with some central funding from the Students’ Union.  The success of the Society depends on the interest, enthusiasm and involvement of the students so please make the effort to get involved!  The type of events which have been organised have ranged from the purely social (parties; outside visits) to the academic (inviting guest speakers to the department).

This society is solely organised by undergraduates within the department although postgraduates, postdoctoral workers and academic members of staff are encouraged to join.
