Student Computing

The Department of Corporate Information and Computing Services (CiCS) provides computing, internet and IT services to the University. You can use CiCS managed computers and facilities in a number of student computer rooms across campus.

There are two main open access computer rooms in the Biological Sciences buildings: Firth Court and the Perak IT Centre. See also:

Campus Networked Services

IT rooms around the campus provide PC computers running the Managed (Windows) XP service which delivers software such as Microsoft Office, internet and email facilities.

You are allocated a secure area of file storage space (your network account) to save work files. Other facilities around campus include printing services and wireless networking.

Working from Home or Off-Campus

CiCS offers a suite of systems and applications that makes it easy for University members to work away from the University.

A number of web pages are limited to members of Sheffield University only. Restricted department resources such as lecture notes and past exam papers are hosted on MOLE, which can be accessed using your University username and password or via the portal MUSE.

For other restricted University areas such as uSpace or library e-journals, you may be denied access. You can gain entry to these pages using any of the following services:

Security and Anti-Virus Protection

All computers across the University campus are centrally updated by CiCS with the latest security patches, anti-virus and firewall software. If you are a home PC or laptop user, take the following precautions to safeguard the security of your own computer systems.
