Sheets of epithelial cells (also known as epithelia) line the body surface and all body cavities As the environment on each side of the cell is different, perhaps it is not surprising that in order for epithelia to develop and function correctly, cellular proteins need to be asymmetrically localized within the cell. Abnormalities in this "apical-basal" polarity results in a range of disorders including cancer and retinal degeneration.
