Transfers into Medicine

Prospective Undergraduates

From 2013 entry we will be offering a small number of our level 1 students (both home and overseas) the opportunity to transfer into level 1 of Medicine at the end of their first year. We anticipate that this route into Medicine will be extremely competitive.  Information on the criteria are available below. In addition take a look at the links on the right, which give information on our degree programme, the careers of our alumni and the diseases we cover in research and teaching.

Medical route application procedure

Prospective and current students please note that under no circumstances should the medical school be contacted about this transfer scheme.

To be eligible for transfer at the end of level 1 of Biomedical Science into level 1 of Medicine students MUST fulfil the following criteria:

Achieve the academic standards for entry to medicine. For 2013 these are currently:

  • 6 grade A's at GCSE (Maths, English and Sciences at least grade C), 3 grade A's at A level (all attained at the same sitting) including Chemistry and a second science (or equivalent)
  • UKCAT score >2400

Submit a strong personal statement, which has a maximum limit of 4000 characters. This statement will form a very important part of your application.

Complete a successful interview with the Medical School*

Achieve at least 70 in both examination components (MCQ and short answer papers) of BMS109 (excludes coursework).

Interested students complete the UKCAT in the summer before they start Biomedical Science The test you did pre-application will not be accepted! For entry to BMS in 2013 and subsequent consideration for a transfer you must do the UKCAT in the summer of 2013!

Students who meet the academic criteria apply through a University of Sheffield online application system (not UCAS) by October the 15th Check the GCSE and A level (or equivalent) requirements. You must meet these.

Applications are considered within BMS, using Medical School criteria. Your personal statement is critical at this point. Have you checked the Medical School information?

Interviews take place and successful candidates are given an offer based on their level 1 EXAM performance. If you are called for interview this does not guarantee an offer. See the information about interviews*

Offer holders who achieve at least 70 in both BMS exams (not coursework) meet the conditions of their offer and transfer to Medicine. If you do not meet the conditions of your offer then you cannot transfer! So make sure you work hard!
