Sheffield is a campus with diversity and integrity. The university allows independence, and has a warm and friendly atmosphere. When I came to Sheffield two and a half years back, like any other international student, I had my own apprehensions. However the warmth I received on arriving at Sheffield made all the apprehensions disappear.
There are innumerable activities to suit the taste of every individual. In Sheffield I was able to experience for the first time sports like fencing, climbing, archery and many more. I also learnt to break dance and got a taste of waltz, salsa and cha-cha.
The student's societies are all very active and involving. I have been involved with International Student´s Committee which is committed to ensure the international students well-being as well as integration into new culture and environment. This has enabled me to make friends from all over the world including home students.
I have been working as residential mentor for 2 years and it has given me confidence as well as skills necessary to balance my academic life with extra-curricular activities. Sheffield has best of the city life and the country side. It's a twenty minute bus journey or drive away from the Peak District so the countryside is just on your doorstep. In my first year I went for mountain rescue trek in the Peak District which was fun since I had never participated in long treks and learning first aid on the trek was a unique learning experience.
After this I have been going to the peak district with my friends for small outings and enjoy the country side. The night life in Sheffield is active and vibrant also the bars are very student-orientated.
Being in Sheffield I have gained valuable experience that has enabled me to pursue my dream in medical research. The guidance and support provided by the university staff and the lecturers are invaluable for honing my academic skills and preparing me for a career in an upcoming area of regenerative medicine.
The best learning experience for me came from working in laboratories during the vacation periods as well as the laboratory research project I got during my third year. It was while working in the laboratories in university that strengthened my resolve to pursue a PhD in Biomedical research.
Looking back on the past two years in Sheffield I feel privileged to have been studying Biomedical Science and still feel the same even in my final year of my degree.
