Postgraduate Study in our department

PhD Postgraduate Study at SheffieldThe Department of Biomedical Science is part of a major international research university with an excellent record in training postgraduate students in the fields of Developmental Biology, Cell Biology, Physiology, Pharmacology, Neuroscience, Stem Cell Science and Regenerative Medicine.

In the Research Assessment Exercise for 2008 we were ranked in third place in the UK for research in Biological Sciences (Source: Times Higher Education).

PhD Postgraduate Research Courses

We offer uniquely integrated studentship programmes that combine fundamental research with the opportunity to study animal models of human disease and human stem cell biology. The life-blood of the department is its research and many of our most important publications are based on work by our graduate research students.

A PhD is a true mark of distinction in academic endeavour. Our principal objective is to make sure that at the end of your study, you will leave here with a PhD of which you can be justifiably proud and which will enable you to become a successful entrant to the doctoral job market.

PhD in Biomedical Science with Integrated Studies

The PhD with integrated studies comprises a one year MSc followed by a three year PhD. Progression to PhD is contingent on passing the MSc component.

Students undertaking the PhD with integrated studies will first undertake one of our MSc courses as the masters component of the programme. Therefore any student wishing to enrol on the PhD with integrated studies must satisfy the entry requirements for the most relevant MSc to their area of research interest.

Projects for the PhD programme may be chosen from any of those currently available in the department, after consultation with the relevant member of staff. Alternatively, candidates may choose to consult with staff during their MSc to determine the projects pursued in the following year. The full scope of research in Biomedical Science can be found on or Research Themes page.
