MRC awards £2.8 million in new partnership with University research centre
The UK Medical Research Council (MRC) has awarded the MRC Centre for Developmental and Biomedical Genetics £2.8 million in a new partnership supporting research into the genetic basis of a wide range of human disorders, including atherosclerosis, chronic inflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases.

Indian student's dream becomes a reality at BMS
Caezaan Keshvani, 17, from Mumbai, India, has secured a place to study Biomedical Science at the University of Sheffield, after winning a reality TV show in his home country. Caezaan beat off fierce competition in the Airtel Scholar Hunt: Destination UK to be offered the three-year undergraduate place at the University, a prize worth more than £55,000 in total.

Europe challenges USA in stem cell research
A major research project linking the expertise of 20 leading organisations aims to keep Europe at the forefront of human embryonic stem cell research, thanks to a €12 million European grant. The ESTOOLS consortium, led by the Centre for Stem Cell Biology at the University of Sheffield in the UK, is a European Union 6th Framework Programme Integrated Project which will advance fundamental understanding and biomedical application of human embryonic stem cells, generating significant benefits in human healthcare.

MRC Chief Executive opens new stem cell lab in Sheffield
Colin Blakemore, Chief Executive of the Medical Research Council, was at the University of Sheffield today to officially open a new laboratory capable of producing embryonic stem lines that can be used in medical treatments. The opening of the leading-edge facility, which is part of the University's Centre for Stem Cell Biology (CSCB), will mean a real step towards new treatments for degenerative and chronic conditions such as diabetes and Parkinson's disease, and to repair tissues after accidents or cancer.
