The University of Sheffield is one of the leading universities in the UK for research. The 2001 Research Assessment Exercise awarded 73% of the university´s subject areas the top grades. This includes subject areas related to bioscience.

Culture
Sheffield has some of the best galleries in the north of England, including the Millennium Galleries, Site Gallery and Cupola Gallery. Other cultural attractions in Sheffield include several museums, the Botanical Gardens and the Winter Gardens. Sheffield is also home to the UK´s first science adventure centre called Magna.

Leisure in Sheffield can take many different forms. The close proximity of the Peak District to the city means that there are great opportunities to participate in activities such as walking, climbing, caving, mountain biking and camping. Sheffield is also home to two professional football clubs, an ice hockey team and a basketball team. Europe´s largest all-season ski resort is at Sheffield´s Ski Village.
