What exactly do our Religion, Theology and the Bible students get up to in a typical week at the University? We asked BibSoc President and third year student Aysha Musa to share her schedule.

Lecture: Decoding the Old Testament

Old Testament texts are critically assessed from different perspectives. The aim is to gain become familiar with certain texts and to gain skills of analysis.

Group work session

Often we work on group presentations which must be planned, researched and presented as a team as part of our assessment.

Lecture: Greek

Learn vocabulary and grammatical rules of an ancient language then translate Biblical texts for yourself.

The University offers a wide variety of extracurricular activities which are great to put on your CV or count towards you Sheffield Graduate award.

Lecture: Religion in an Age of Terror

This module which considers how the Bible is used in the media during times of conflict or crisis. For example in politics.

The interval is the perfect place to relax with friends for a bite to eat and legendary hot chocolates.

The Information Commons (or IC) isa library/study space. It's a brilliant place to work on class assignments or research. There are hundreds of computers available just for students and rooms that you can book for group work.

Student/ Staff Committee Meeting:

At committee meetings, we sit down with lecturers to formally discuss the feedback students give on their modules. It is one of the ways that we help shape the way that The Department approaches its teaching.

Night out at The Students' Union - The Tuesday Club

This is one of the many club nights offered at The Students Union. It's nationally renowned for its Dubstep, Drum n Bass, and Hip Hop playlists, but If this isn't your cup of tea, the Students' Union offers lots of alternatives.

Volunteering:

I volunteer at a local school, but volunteering opportunities can range from working to helping out in the city through to baking or fun runs. It’s an excellent opportunity to make your CV stand out. The Union offer volunteer work through their website and also have a manned desk where you can get any type of volunteering help or advice.

Off to the cinema with Friends: The Film Unit

We have our very own student run cinema at The University of Sheffield - it's the oldest student cinema in the country and twice winners of the BFFS Best Student Cinema award. Tickets for students are only £2.50!!

BibSoc Meeting:

The Students' Union is home to over 250 societies. One of these is run by and for students in The Department of Biblical Studies - BibSoc. We have weekly meetings where committee members organise events. Any one is welcome to attend the meeting and contribute in whatever manner they wish.

Western Bank

Study time at Western Bank Library:

The University is home to four libraries and Western Bank is a great alternative to the IC for Religion, Theology and the Bible students. It's a Grade II* listed building and views overlook Weston Park.

Seminar: Decoding the Old Testament

Modules that cover a lot of content also have tutorials which provide students a chance discuss the lesson material with their tutor or work on projects together.

The Students' Union runs a Give it a Go programme where you can try new things, meet new people, learn new skills and visit different places. Activities range from sculpting lessons, learning sign language, dance lessons to zorbing! I sign up for sessions regularly. You can find out more using the link below.

Personal Tutor Meeting:

Everyone has a personal tutor, someone you can go to about any worries or difficulties. You can see your personal tutor as little or as much as you want (but there are two compulsory meetings per semester).

We have a bar/diner at The Students' Union where there is always something going on, with a great atmosphere and loads of student deals, what’s not to love!

Work!

I work part-time as a Student Ambassador for The University and there are loads of jobs available through the Student Job Shop, including work in the Union as well as placements with local companies. You can look for temporary work (e.g. distributing flyers)  or jobs that have flexible hours to fit in with your timetable. Our Careers Service also offer guidance and support in gaining experience for the world of work and Religion, Theology and the Bible degree also provides you with the opportunity to undertake work experience and placements.
