Paul was one of the most influential religious thinkers of the ancient world and the 13 letters ascribed to Paul offer unrivalled insights into the growth and development of earliest Christianity. This collection of writings also forms a substantial section of the New Testament and is of significant theological, ethical and socio-historical interest.

Letters were a regular and important means of communication in the Roman world between individuals and individuals and larger groups. Their senders and recipients did not need to be literate because they would be read aloud. This module will explore scholarly debates and theories concerning Paul's letters in their wider Jewish and Greco-Roman contexts.
