Energy Leagues
Saving Energy- It's Everybody's Business!
FAQs

If you want to get in touch with your department's Environmental Champion for more information on how you can get involved in saving energy, see this list.
If you do not already have an Environmental Champion in your building or department, it could be you! See www.greenimpact.group.shef.ac.uk for how to sign up. You can also suggest energy-saving schemes or request an energy audit with our Energy Engineer on our energy webpages: http://www.shef.ac.uk/efm/engineeringmaintenance/energy_carbon-mgt/energyefficiency

Q. Why do we need to save energy?
A. The University has signed up to the HEFCE-level carbon targets to reduce emissions by 43% by 2020. So we have an obligation to do this – but it’s also the right thing to do.
-
Q. What is the Energy Strategy?
A. The Energy Strategy spells out how we’ll achieve those carbon reductions, through a mix of generating out own low carbon heat and power, improving the energy efficiency of our buildings, and encouraging all our staff to think about the energy they use – and use less wherever they can.
-
Q. So how do the Energy Leagues work?
A. Buildings will be competing to beat their own performance from the previous year. Each building’s energy consumption from 2012/2013 will be displayed here soon, so you know where you’re starting from, and we’ll soon be launching the energy dashboard so you can watch your progress.
-
Q. Surely it’s not a fair competition because we have so many different sizes of building?
A. That’s why we’ve divided the estate up into three leagues: Large users; medium users and small users. That way, each building will be pitted against a similar building, so there’ll be a pretty level playing field.
-
Q. What are the prizes on offer?
A. As a University, our core business is the student experience so the prizes for departments will be to support scholarships – how each department allocates those scholarships is a local decision. The winners of the large users league will receive £3,000 (6 scholarships); the medium users £1,500 (3 users); and the small users £500 (1 scholarship). Where there’s more than one department in a building, the prize will be divided equally between them.
-
Q. I’m in a professional services department, so how does that work for us?
A. You’ll be able to use your share of the prize to pay for something which helps your building reduce its environmental impact even further.
-
Q. This seems to be just about electricity – why aren’t you focusing on heating as well?
A. Electricity accounts for over 75% of our carbon emissions so it seems like the best place to start. Individuals also tend to have less control over heating but it is something we’ll look at for the future.
-
Q. Where do we start?
A great start is to get in touch with the Environment Champion(s) within your building and department, to discuss energy saving options. See above for a list and more information.
