SESSION HANDOUTS FROM THE AUA YORKSHIRE REGIONAL CONFERENCE – UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD – 5 NOVEMBER 2009

On 5 November 2009 the University of Sheffield hosted the 4th AUA Yorkshire Regional one-day Conference, which this year focussed on the impact of change across all aspects of Higher Education.

Over 100 delegates (both AUA members and non-members) from within the region and further afield joined us for a variety of workshops and presentations, covering change-related issues such as managing changing student expectations through induction (Margaret Freeman, University of Sheffield), the rise of the third space professional (Dr Celia Whitchurch, Institute of Education, University of London), changing perceptions : social networking (Sue Beckingham and Jayne Evans, Sheffield Hallam University), and the new marketing agenda (Rosemary Stamp, Stamp Consulting Limited) to name a few. The highlight of the event was a discussion forum, chaired by Alison Robinson, Executive Director of AUA. The Vice Chancellors of University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University along with a representative from Yorkshire Forward, responded to delegates’ questions on topics including the sustainability of higher education funding through the economic downturn, the importance of an evolving admin/management role in supporting higher education, and the impact of HEIs on the local community from the perspective of sustaining and developing the future regional workforce.

Jayne Barker, AUA Yorkshire Regional Co-ordinator reported “this event has certainly been a great success and thanks should go to the excellent Yorkshire branch co-ordinator team for their support in running this event.
I have personally received congratulations from several delegates who felt this was the best regional event they have attended so far, which is praise indeed but we are always ready to listen to our members’ requests. With that in mind, our intention is that we will be testing a set of shorter (lunchtime or late afternoon) “keynote” events around the Yorkshire region over the next 12-24 months on topics already identified as of specific interest to our members. This is in addition to the usual programme of events within individual branches. Look out for information relating to these events via the AUA website very soon.”

Session handouts are available for download from the table below.
