The University of Sheffield
School of Architecture
Reputation

We are acknowledged as one of the leading schools of architecture - currently ranked 4th in the UK in The Times 2013 Good University Guide. Sheffield is a world class University – the Times Higher Education Supplement’s University of the Year in 2011 – in a friendly city, with cheap accommodation and great things to see and do. Sheffield is ranked 1st for overall student experience too.

The RIBA 2012 visiting Board Report commended us for ‘The quality of student experience developing from the combination of the university’s traditional commitment to academic excellence, the clear ethos of the school of architecture, and the enhanced resources of the refurbished Arts Tower’

Our school is known for its strong social conscience and many of our projects are ‘live’; they deal with real clients, real sites and real societal, environmental and architectural issues. We believe that making good architecture can really improve wellbeing. Some of our staff have received awards for doing just that.

We are leaders in innovative and exciting approaches to teaching. Acccording to the National Student Survey 95% of Undergraduates found the programmes here stimulating with 94% of them thinking that staff explain their subject well and make it interesting.

There is plenty to enjoy outside the curriculum too. As one student recently commented: ‘The extra lectures and projects that the SSoA has to offer are great, especially the activities within Sheffield University Architecture Society (SUAS). I feel that I am in a very involved and up-to-date school that places great emphasis on progression and the future.’

At this school your teachers will include world class researchers and practitioners working at the cutting edge of their fields. The RIBA Visiting Board noted ‘the clearly articulated synergies between the exceptional research work of school staff, and the carefully managed integration of this with teaching at all levels of the programme’.

We pride ourselves on being approachable and supportive. In the words of an overseas student, ‘The department has a strong ‘friendly vibe’, which is evident throughout the whole school, promoting a positive and encouraging learning environment’.

Our school is regarded with great affection by our alumni network who loyally support our current students in lots of ways all across the world. ‘Well I have had a blast in the past 2 and half years here. I will always have fond memories’. Year 3 student.

We invite you to join us here in the newly refurbished Arts Tower to come and see for yourself.
