BSc (Architectural Studies), BArch (Strathclyde), MSc(Heriot-Watt), PhD (Strathclyde)
I have been responsible for over 30 research studies on architectural healthcare environments coordinating and directing research projects e.g. EPSRC-funded LEAF (Learning from Experience-Applying systematic Feedback to improve the briefing process in construction) published in Lawson et al 2003, the Poole and Brighton Hospitals studies, the Leeds Nuffield Hospital Evaluation-One patient, one room theory and practice, Macmillan Cancer Support building evaluations 2005-9, Adams Ward Oxford Radcliffe Infirmary Study and others. I have received over 16 research grants from, HaCIRIC (Health and Care Infrastructure Research and Innovation Centre – EPSRC-Funded collaboration of Imperial College, Loughborough, Reading & Salford Universities), Department of Health, NHS Estates, Healthcare Scotland, Guy’s & St Thomas NHS Trust, South Tees NHS Trust, Macmillan Cancer Support, Rotunda and Sligo General Hospitals, Ireland, Clinicenta and others. I am a chartered architect with over 17 years’ post-qualification experience in private and public practice.
| Teaching Activities |
I teach architecture in its broadest sense. My approach to teaching is based and derives from research studies on architectural healthcare environments more specifically the contribution of the physical environment on health outcomes such as sleep patterns, reduction in falls and quality of life. Research on the planning and design of healthcare facilities is needed to show how they could be better designed, built, operated at a sustainable cost and within an adaptable and flexible framework while being informed by evidence from scientific studies of improving health outcomes for patients and staff productivity and welfare. My approach to teaching is also about designerly ways of knowing through practical examples, learning from precedent, education and professional practice. I am currently developing a new Masters Degree (MSc Architecture and Well Being) with the following modules: Advanced Research Methods 1 Other than supervision of PhD’s, I also currently teach the following: |
| Research Interests |
Research Interests involve 3 main activities:- 1) Conducting original empirical investigations such as (Lawson & Phiri 2000, Lawson & Phiri 2003) and supervising researchers, dissertations and PhD studentships. 2) Collating, reviewing, structuring knowledge (Phiri 2006), compiling electronic databases for example Sheffield Healthcare Environment Database available on CD-Rom but published on the Department of Health website and on http://hear.group.shef.ac.uk. 3) Developing guidance and design tools (such as ASPECT {A Staff/Patient Environment Calibration Tool}/AEDET {Achieving Excellence Design Evaluation Toolkit} Evolution/ IDEAs {Inspiring Design Excellence and Achievements} which I coauthored) to aid the design process (Lawson 2007). ASPECT allows a more detailed evaluation of buildings and environments against the latest known research on the impact of design on patient and staff satisfaction as well as other health outcomes. These tools are used on all UK healthcare projects. |
| Grants, Awards, & Consultancy |
RESEARCH GRANT: “Nurturing an Evidence-Based Learning Environment which supports the Innovative Design of Healthcare Facilities or similar” (Acronym EBLE) a research collaboration between Sheffield and Loughborough Universities under EPSRC-funded HaCIRIC aims to: a) Assemble and critically compare the structured quality and evidence-based design guidance and tools already well-embedded in healthcare design against alternative stakeholder value in design approaches and b) Create a debate that will drive forward improved healthcare outcomes and strengthen the quality and safety agenda, thus nurturing an innovation promoting learning environment. |
