Senior Lecturer
BA (Hons), Dip Arch, PhD
My research, practice and teaching combine interests in design participation, architecture education and children’s spaces. These fields often meet in projects to engage children in the architectural design process, or in teaching which seeks to engage students in directing their own learning. In a former life I was education manager at the Groundwork Trust (Wakefield) and I completed a PhD in social aspects of domestic sustainability. I have been teaching at Sheffield since 1998 and was appointed full-time in 2003.
| Teaching Activities |
I have contributed to teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and in 2007 received the University´s Senate Award for Learning and Teaching. Much of my teaching and related scholarship is underpinned by a commitment to supporting all students in developing the insight and confidence to be able to fully participate in their own education, to take more control and enjoy their learning. This involves raising awareness of the educational framework within which they work and developing critical skills. Some of the clear threads through my work therefore include peer learning, promoting reflection and supporting variety of learning approach. These modest efforts ultimately seek to re-balance the normative culture of the design studio. The involvement of young people in learning and design processes is a central feature of my current activities, through outreach, knowledge transfer & research; each of which also overlaps with my teaching from time to time, allowing University and school students to work together. On the MArch programme I developed the Reflections on Architectural Education module, which provides opportunities for students to critique their own education within a theoretical and practice-based context and asks students to carry out related action research in the school of architecture. I have been involved in mentoring live projects since 1999 and I supervise research projects at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including a number of PhD studies. From Dec 2005-Nov 2007 I was faculty Director of Learning and Teaching Development. I have been active in Architectural Education conferences in the UK since 1999 and have carried out work for the Higher Education Academy subject centre, CEBE, on the design review process and supporting student diversity. Developed and tested a hands-on large scale construction learning resource with the teachers and pupils. Collaborative project with the Bureau of Design Research (BDR). |
| Research Interests |
My current research focuses on children´s environments and engaging young people in architecture through the design process and learning programmes. This work is concerned with: the transformative potential of interactions between young people and designers; the support and development of young people´s voices and their contribution to the changing built environment; and the transformative potential of exploring architectural education in schools. I am a board member of the University's interdisciplinary research Centre for the Study of Childhood and Youth (CSCY) and contribute to the centre´s PhD student programme, through seminars and the summer school. |

Children Transforming Spatial Design: creative encounters with children January 2013 – December 2015. Leverhulme Trust. PI R Parnell, RAs Jo Birch, Maria Patsarika, Masa Sorn Children’s participation in built environment design has been so far supported by children’s rights debates and evidence of the learning benefits resulting from collaboration with professionals in real-life contexts. Increasingly, however, practice-based anecdotal evidence points to more dialogical perspectives bringing transformational potential, through reciprocal learning and the particular qualities that children can bring to the design process itself. The nature of this potential has not been adequately explored and evidenced through research. This project aims to address this gap by documenting, understanding and theorising designer-child interactions in co-design, reflecting a vision of design as a creative and collective learning process. Architecture for Everyone Legacy Evaluation May 2011 – August 2011. Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust/RMJM. PI R Parnell, RA Maria Patsarika An evaluation of the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust's now completed 3 year outreach programme - Architecture for Everyone(A4E). This evaluation is set in the context of a wider review of academic, policy- and practice-based literature. The final output includes recommendations for the Trust in their future work to support the increased diversity of students and professionals in the field of architecture and the built environment more broadly. Pupils Pass it On: The Sorrell Foundation [see final report from Downloads] July 2010 – November 2010. Rapid Research Fund, HEIF. PI R Parnell, RA Maria Patsarika, £10,000. A pilot study to evaluate the impacts of the Sorrell Foundation´s Joinedupdesignfor BSF programme: a programme of student engagement in the school design process. RIBA HSE Research January 2010 - December 2010. RIBA HSE Research Fund. Dan Jary, Leo Care, R. Parnell and Howard Evans, £10,000. The aim of this research is to develop a better understanding of the quality and variability of undergraduate training in relation to the designer's role in eliminating health and safety risks and to point at improvements. The project will build on their experience of teaching health and safety within the undergraduate design studio at the University's School of Architecture. Involving Users in the School Design Process. Oct 2006 – April 2010, EPSRC. PI R Parnell, RAs Maria Patsarika, Vicky Cave, Lisa Procter, £243,000 FEC Exploring and evaluating approaches to engaging the whole school community, including young people, in the school design process. This project includes a review of literature, a survey of professionals and schools and 4 case studies of live school design projects in the UK. The project was intended to inform policy related to school design and construction programmes. In September 2009, the project findings were presented to a mixed group of stakeholders, including Partnerships for Schools, CABE, DCSF, facilitators, architects, students, teachers and local authority representatives who worked to develop an action plan for dissemination. The findings have been developed as a web resource. The Change Project: engaging young people in architecture. Sept 2006 – Aug 2008, Paul Hamlyn Foundation. PI R Parnell, RA Lisa Procter, £61,188 (no overhead) Exploring the potential benefits of supporting learning through architecture and built environment-related activities. This project had a particular emphasis on raising awareness of the built-environment and developing related critical skills to support participation in shaping the environment. This was achieved through a 15 month programme of integrated, hands-on, student-centred learning with a variety of young people´s groups/classes and included development sessions for 90 youth workers and teachers (and trainee teachers) in Sheffield.
