University Teacher
Hon RNCM, BA(Hons), BArch, Dip Professional Practice (Dist), RIBA, ARB
I was introduced to the Sheffield University School of Architecture as an examiner on the RIBA Part 3 course. My involvement with the school encouraged me to pursue my interest in teaching.
I am Director of Learning and Teaching for the School.
My early 20's were spent operating the sound desk for punk bands throughout Europe. Later I qualified as a furniture maker, which eventually led me to study architecture at the University of Manchester.
I worked with Ian Simpson Architects and for 10 years with MBLA Architects, where I focused on residential, healthcare and Higher Education projects.

I have contributed to all levels of the BA and MArch courses. Higher Education and the imperative for students to take responsibility for their own learning can be disorientating for students until they get become familiar with the sensation of uncertainty that accompanies inquiry and exploration. I place great emphasis on providing appropriate support for students going through this transition and in engendering trust between students and tutors. I believe that equipping students with a strong sense of ethics alongside critical reflection is an essential part of their personal development. I am particularly interested in the peer support network that is generated through a studio-based community of inquiry and learning. I am interested in how students and tutors benefit from the collective and collaborative learning environment that is typified by studio. With Leo Care, I developed the web-based Feedback Handbook for the School. This resource provides information for students and for staff. It aims to explain and contextualise the types and uses of feedback that might be provided in the School, and how the feedback process might be used to best effect. It has been acknowledged as good practice by the University and by external bodies. Since 2009 I have been involved in knowledge exchange projects between the School and The Hepworth Wakefield. These have included the formal development of outreach programmes, where students worked with the Hepworth’s education team as well as one-off architecture tours of the building and it’s context within the Wakefield Waterfront regeneration area. The most recent project saw 3 PhD students from the School of Architecture assisting the Hepworth’s front of house staff in writing their own detailed architectural tours of the gallery. The knowledge exchange process for this involved the students developing mini-architectural courses in the form of workshops that the gallery staff participated in. |
