DipArch, MArch, PhD, PGCE, FHEA

Dr Hasim Altan is a lecturer at the School of Architecture, with particular interests in Sustainable Architecture and Sustainable Environmental Design. He joined the School in September 2004 as a Postdoctoral Research Associate; working on a major research project (3.2m) funded by the EPSRC and Carbon Trust as part of Carbon Vision Buildings (CVB) programme, and was appointed to his current position in September 2008.

Following a Diploma in Architecture at the Technical University of Istanbul, he studied a Masters in Architecture at the University of Sheffield where he also achieved a PhD. His thesis focused on the drivers and barriers to improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon dioxide emissions in the private housing sector, where he investigated energy efficiency standards of 250 privately rented properties in Sheffield.

In the School of Architecture, Dr Altan is leading an independent research group, Building Environments Analysis Unit (BEAU), which is a long-established and a registered Research Centre in the University of Sheffield where he aims to promote Sustainable Design and Simulation in practice and provide Environmental Design and Sustainability advice, and resources to the building industry in related areas as part of knowledge transfer and exchange.

Teaching Activities

Dr Altan currently teaches on the postgraduate taught masters programmes in the School where he is running two masters modules; (1) Building Environmental Simulation and Analysis and (2) Integrated Design Project, as well as supervising research projects at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He also delivers lectures and workshops for the undergraduate/diploma Architecture courses on Computer Aided Environmental Design skills to RIBA Part 1 and Part 2 students, which greatly increases the visibility of Sustainable Design in studio project work.

Research Interests

Dr Altan is an Architect-Lecturer and Environmental Designer with particular interest in Energy Efficient Housing and Sustainable Building Design. He promotes the use of Building Environmental Design, Simulation and Modelling in practice at the early design stages to inform the building design and performance for future in order to achieve true sustainability.

His recent work has involved large scale consortium; CaRB project; Carbon Reduction in Buildings - a socio-technical, longitudinal study of carbon use in buildings. This was a research programme of Carbon Vision Buildings aimed at reducing carbon emissions from the UK building stock. CVB has been formed out of the Carbon Vision Partnership of the EPSRC and the Carbon Trust, and with the support of the ESRC. The vision of CaRB was to create an innovative, public domain, socio-technical model of energy use in buildings applicable at national, regional, city and community level. It predicted current carbon emissions and the changes resulting from energy efficiency measures, the deployment of renewable energy technologies and the use of non-technical interventions. CaRB had been conducted by a consortium of five universities in the UK in partnership with ESD and RICS (http://www.carb.org.uk).
