A shelter in Sheffield for a shelter in Africa

This project focuses on the construction of a temporary shelter that will host workshops for a self-building housing project run by a women's organisation in Dakar , Senegal . This process will include the production of prototype transportable [demountable] structures that will be researched, designed, constructed and tested at the University of Sheffield .

Our aims are :

"Building Library" - A simple data base on the internet which includes the group's research of sustainable building techniques, showing old and new techniques with simple, clear instructions for building with unusual materials.

"Shelter Day" - An educational event that addresses issues of eco-design, self-build, gender, race and post-colonialism. This will comprise of constructing a shelter designed through our materials research where the group will sleep the night in order to raise funds through sponsorship.
