Ian Sanders´ interest in Classical Archaeology began while he was still a pupil at Warwick Grammar School. During his undergraduate career at Oxford, where he read Classics, he was involved in the excavation of Roman and medieval sites and became President of the University Archaeology Society.

By the time of his graduation in 1972 he had become fascinated by ancient Crete, and made the archaeology of Roman Crete the subject of his doctoral thesis. Early in 1976 he was appointed to a lectureship in the Department of Ancient History and Classical Archaeology at Sheffield. Here he played a crucial role in the development of Classical Archaeology as a major component of teaching and research.

He had only just finished his doctoral dissertation when, in October 1977, he died a tragically premature death. The way in which he bore his long and difficult illness occasioned the admiration of all who knew him. It is a measure of his distinction that the University of Oxford consented to a posthumous award of the doctorate. In addition, his thesis was immediately accepted for publication and appeared as Roman Crete. An Archaeological Survey and Gazetteer of Late Hellenistic, Roman, and Early Byzantine Crete in 1982.

The high esteem in which he was held was also reflected in the speedy growth of the Ian Sanders Memorial Fund, the aim of which remains to encourage the study of Classical Archaeology at Sheffield.
