Saturday 6th June SILENCE MINE, GREAT HUCKLOW
The Peak District Mines Historical Society conservation team are now working at Silence Mine near Great Hucklow, and John Barnatt has agreed to guide us around the site. The mine is just under a kilometre away from Great Hucklow on the road to Bretton at SK188780. Meet at the mine at 11am. As all parking space at the site is used by the conservation team, please park in the village and walk up, or wait for Liz Hackett who will run a shuttle from the eastern end of the village up to the mine.
A few years ago we visited the conservation team working at High Rake Mine near Windmill, west of Great Hucklow at SK164777. This work is now finished and the remains can be viewed. There are three interpretation panels. You may wish to go there after our visit to Silence Mine.
Sunday 12th July SHEFFIELD MANOR LODGE
The new Discovery Centre at Sheffield Manor Lodge will be open and Sheffield University archaeologists will be excavating in what is believed to be the area of the kitchen range not previously investigated. Peter Machan will meet us at the Discovery Centre at 10am. He will show us around the centre and talk to us about the Lodge and the finds from previous excavations. Michael McCoy from the university will be our guide at this year´s excavations at about 11.30am. This promises to be a very interesting morning. Sheffield Manor Lodge is on Manor Lane and the Discovery Centre is by the side of the Lodge just a little further up Manor Lane. The no.10 bus to Manor Park Centre goes up Manor Lane and the 95 and 41 go up City Road. It is not far to walk from the 95 or 41 bus stop near the junction with Manor Lane and City Road to the site. Car parking is on Manor Lane or roads around if the car park is full.
Saturday 5th September CODNOR CASTLE
At the February meeting Gavin Chamberlain and Mike Peart spoke to us about Codnor Castle, and as a follow up to their talk have agreed to show us around the castle. They will meet us in front of the Poet and Castle pub by the clock tower in Codnor market place at 2pm. There is plenty of parking in the market place or on the surrounding streets. The castle is a twenty minute walk away along an easy footpath. To get to Codnor from Sheffield take either the M1 or the A61 south from Chesterfield then join the A38. From the A38, take the A610 to Ripley, then Codnor.
There are two other possible visits but we do not yet have details. Colin Merrony tells us he is probably digging in Castleton in June but will not know for certain for a few weeks. Also John Moreland hopes to work at Benty Grange this summer. If you are interested in going, we should have more information later in May please phone Liz on 2367037 or Ruth on 2882640.
