Research Activities

APS has a strong record of research activity in whole-organism, and environmental biology and was ranked 7th in the world for environment and ecology (Times Higher Education, 2007).

Animal and Plant Sciences is one of the three biological sciences departments at Sheffield, the other two being Molecular Biology & Biotechnology and Biomedical Science. There are five research themes in the department. Biology at Sheffield was ranked 3rd in the UK in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise with 70% of our research activity being judged as 'world leading' or 'internationally excellent'.

Population & Community Ecology

The work of this group is at the forefront of addressing pure and applied issues in ecology and conservation such as: the importance of biodiversity, the provision of ecosystem services and the impacts of exploitation, disease and invasive species on populations and communities.

Evolutionary Biology and Behavioural Ecology

The focus of the evolution and behaviour research group is on the evolutionary and mechanistic bases of behaviour. Research in both areas is facilitated by the location of the NERC-funded Molecular Genetics Facility - Sheffield within this research group.

Global Change

The Global Change Research Group is at the forefront of research on effects of climate and atmospheric change on plants, plant environmental and biotic interactions, and molecular plant physiology.

Plant Science

Research in plant biology covers a broad spectrum of topics, from whole plant interactions with the abiotic and biotic environment (microbial and fungal) to precise analysis of metabolic pathways.

Ecosystem Ecology

Research in this group focuses on the interactions between organisms and their environment, at a range of spatial and temporal scales. Key research areas include spatial processes, ecosystem functioning and environmental impact and biogeochemical processes.
