Information for Prospective Undergraduates
Welcome to our pages for future undergraduates. Here you will find details of our BSc and MBiolSci courses and entry requirements and application procedures. To get a better idea of what it's like to be a student here, for student and staff profiles, and information on accommodation, life in Sheffield and careers, use the links to the left and right, .

If you are interested in visiting us, please see our pages on open days (link at left). While we can accommodate individual visits, we encourage you to consider our 10 post application open days in the new year.
Organismal Biology - cutting edge science from cells to ecosystems
Life sciences are at the forefront of science and technology in the 21st century, and organismal biology has a major role in the accelerating pace of new discoveries in the biosciences. Advances in molecular genetics and DNA technologies are providing fascinating and important new insights into plant, animal and human life. Experiments and modelling of organisms and their communities, at local and global scales, is thus vital to our understanding biodiversity, impacts of global climate change, natural resource management and conservation.
Modern Facilities, Flexibility and Support
Our students experience cutting edge teaching, research and technology in modern facilities, and have an outstanding record of achievement - over 85% graduating with 2:1 or 1st class marks in recent years. We are unique in offering both BSc and advanced MBiolSci undergraduate degrees, which run in parallel, providing flexible opportunities for specialisation not available elsewhere (see below). Our graduates find a wide array of employment opportunities in industry, research and education including journalism, law, bioethics, patenting, accountancy, environmental protection, conservation, management, technical and medical professions.
Research Led Teaching - Participation and Partnership
The Department of Animal and Plant Sciences is one of the most successful departments specialised in whole-organism biology in the UK. All of our 40+ academic staff teach, informed by their latest findings and current scientific controversies, providing exciting, up-to-date learning and training for our students.
We offer 14 degree courses based around the core subjects of Biology, Zoology, Plant Sciences and Ecology. We offer students a large choice of specialist modules, including field courses, and the option of taking subjects as a three year (BSc), or four year (MBiolSci) degree.
Our students experience many face-to-face interactive teaching methods, including small group tutorials, practicals, projects and field courses, together with lectures and seminars. We initially develop their skills to undertake research in biology, eventually building a valuable partnership in which students become involved in our research as we train them. All of our students gain real-life research experience and advanced skills through a major lab/field project and a dissertation in their third year; the final year of the MBiolSci involves a second more extensive, individual research project similar to that conducted in a Master of Science (MSc) degree.
The BSc (3-year) and MBiolSci (4-year)
Our 4-year MBiolSci degrees add an extra year to our highly popular 3-year BSc courses and provide advanced training in organismal biology, research methods and science communication skills. These courses are designed specifically to provide advanced research training for students who are interested in pursuing professional careers in Biology. They provide skills and experience that go significantly beyond those attainable in three-year degree programmes. Two-thirds of the fourth year is dedicated to a major research project developed in collaboration with member of staff, working in their research team. For more information follow this link.
