Evolutionary ecology of parasite infection in semi-captive Asian elephants

Main supervisor: Virpi Lummaa
Keywords: Life-history, reproductive success, conservation, parasitology, Asian elephant, endocrinology

This project will use a large established dataset collected from Asian elephants in Myanmar to determine associations between multiple parasite species, health and reproductive endocrinology in nature. The Myanmar timber industry necessitates continuous capture of wild elephants to supplement the world’s largest captive elephant population; hence the health of the working elephant population is tightly linked to the endangered wild population. We collect data on body weight, and take blood and faecal samples from known individuals to identify and quantify infections with multiple parasite species, and to assay endocrine and chemical indicators of health. Regular anti-parasite treatment to reduce parasite numbers provides a rare opportunity to combine observational and experimental approaches.

The project will (1) provide the first detailed investigation of the parasite fauna of Myanmar timber elephants and describe causes of variation between individuals in infection intensities; (2) investigate associations between infection and health; (3) reveal interactions between infection and reproductive behaviour by determining associations between infection and reproductive hormones.

The results will contribute to the welfare and management practices of the working elephants and to the conservation of endangered Asian elephants. They will also advance our general knowledge of interactions between parasites, body condition and reproductive hormones. The project will involve statistical analysis of large longitudinal datasets, fieldwork in Myanmar and analysis of samples in the field. The student will receive training in statistical modelling and sample analysis. Those with a background in veterinary parasitology or parasite ecology are particularly encouraged to apply.
