If there are any questions about Graduate studies in APS, or the application procedure, which are not answered on these pages, then general enquiries can be made to the APS Graduate Secretary - Mrs Sue Carter (address below), or to the appropriate member of staff, if the enquiry concerns a specific project or research topic.

Information about applications to the University, and various other aspects of graduate study at Sheffield can also be found on the Graduate Research Office web site. You can also order the (paper copy) of the University Graduate Prospectus online.
(see links on right)

Applications procedure

Applications for graduate study may be made to the Department at any time, but most graduate students commence their studies at the beginning of the academic session (October) and applications for entry in October of a given year should be made as early as possible during that year.

Application forms (online and also as downloads) are available on:

http://www.shef.ac.uk/postgraduate/research/apply/index.html

Research Council Studentships

Announcements of projects that have been submitted for funding will be made in January, and Research Council funding decisions are made in early March, so this is the main period for reviewing applications, holding interviews and allocating Research Council studentships.

If you wish to apply to the Department for graduate study funded by a UK Research Council (NERC, BBSRC etc.), then you should send a covering letter specifying which project(s) you are interested in (or if it is prior to specific projects being advertised, which research area you are interested in), along with a full curriculum vitae, including the names of two academic referees, to Sue Carter (see address below).

On receipt, your application will be looked at by the specified member(s) of staff, and other relevant staff from the research group(s) to which you are applying. Referee's reports may also be requested. Interviews are normally held for all short-listed home (UK) based students.

Decisions on allocation and award of studentships will normally be made during February, at which time all applicants will be notified.

Overseas applicants, and applicants for University Studentships

  1. Identify the research area, or specific project(s), that you are interested in, and what possible sources of funding may be open to you
  2. Obtain an application form, either by post, or electronically (either to download or fill out online) from the Graduate Research Office web site
  3. Fill out the form as fully as possible and send it to the Graduate Research Office as directed on the form

Applications will be acknowledged and applicants will be notified of a decision as soon as possible. Interviews are not normally held for overseas applicants.
