As a strongly research led Department, Animal and Plant Sciences provides a large, vibrant, research environment for doing postgraduate work. Biological Sciences at Sheffield was ranked 3rd in the UK Research Assessment Exercise based the proportions of ‘world-leading’ and ‘internationally excellent’ research. Our postgraduate students play a key role in the research activity and output of the Department. Our research focuses on whole-organism biology and is grouped into three broad research themes.

Opportunities, enquiries and applications

Each year we offer specific PhD/MPhil projects across the breadth of our research interests. These opportunities are usually advertised in late autumn, and recruitment takes place between October and March. However, projects often become available at other times in the year, and if you have a particular interest in one of our research areas, then it is worth contacting us to find out what other opportunities there might be.
