The Internet

This section concerns itself with the internet.

What search engine should I use?
What's a good HTML reference?
How do I use the online citation indices?
Where and how can I download stuff for Windows?
Where and how can I download stuff for Linux?
Where and how can I download stuff for Solaris?
I'm downloading in Netscape and it's going frantic!
Where can I find information on GRIDs?
Where can I find a decent train timetable online?

What search engine should I use?

At the moment (Feb 2002), the best is undoubtedly Google.

What's a good HTML reference?

How do I use the online citation indices?

Get the Athens access username and password (if you don't already have it), then use it to log on to the Web of Science. The menus should be self-explanatory thenceforce.

For a prettified list of papers ordered by number of citations, select Full Search and follow the selections below:

Full Search Page

Check "Science Citation Index" and your preferred year range.
Select "General Search"

General Search Page
Enter search terms and sort options (at bottom of screen)
Select "Search" (either button)

General Search Results -- Summary Page
Select "Mark All", then go through the page(s) and *uncheck* works by anyone sharing your name, etc.
Select "Submit Marks"
Select "Marked List" (sixth button along on the top row)

Marked Records Page
Check any fields you want to include (eg times cited)
Choose sort option (sort by date, etc)
Select "Format for Print"

Print it out as you prefer.

Where and how can I download stuff for Windows?

Mirror.ac.uk

Where and how can I download stuff for Linux?

RPM Find

Where and how can I download stuff for Solaris?

SunFreeware (look for a UK mirror on Janet, it's much faster)

I'm downloading in Netscape and it's going frantic!

You might be downloading a compressed file and see a download status box like this:

D o w n l o a d B o x

And the cursor in the bottom left corner is belting back and forth madly. No, it hasn't hung - it's decompressing rather than actually downloading. Be patient, young Jedi.

Where can I find information on GRIDs?

Please let me know if any of the links below are broken, or if you have any other good links.

Astrogrid
European Grid
Clipper
Global Grid Forum
Globus
Nasa's Information Power Grid

Where can I find a decent train timetable online?

Yes, the national rail enquiries, trainline, and virgin timetables are pretty ropey, aren't they?   It's come to a pretty sad state of affairs when the best online timetable is from Deutche Bundesbahn:

http://www.dbahn.de/

Select Int. Guests for an English timetable - you can't book online, but it is quick and shows the trains, unlike our national  set of train operators.
