Alumni Fund Scholarships are worth £3,000 each for undergraduates and £2,000 each for postgraduates, and are awarded to students from each of the University´s five Faculties.

Sikose Mjali - UG English Language and Linguistics
Sheffield is one of those places that creeps into your heart and mind without you even noticing. I have always wanted to be a part of a community like this where laughs and smiles are not only infectious; but are the order of the day. Having moved from South Africa five years ago, Sheffield has provided me with all I that I have needed socially, emotionally, academically and financially...
Edward Mullin - UG Biomedical Science
Since starting High School I have always had the drive to study at a university and establish myself as an academic. However it was very important that I could find a university where I would fit in socially and enjoy my time there. Sheffield University ticked all the right boxes for me. Its friendly attitude and supporting manner impressed me right from the first open day and I felt right at home...

Frances Brelsford - UG Dental Surgery
I decided to stay in Sheffield to study Dentistry for a number of reasons. I was thoroughly impressed by the Dental Hospital throughout my work experience there and upon researching the course itself, I was very attracted to the early patient interaction and human dissection. By staying in Sheffield, I could also keep my part-time job and remain in close contact with my friends and family...
Miki Tillett - UG English and Philosophy
I chose the University of Sheffield on the basis of its excellent facilities and academic reputation, as well as its friendly atmosphere. Importantly, I also liked the city as a whole when I visited it for the Open Day; I wanted an environment for my studies that I could feel at home in, and I think that Sheffield fits this very well. Having a scholarship means that the constant financial anxiety...

Amy Gladwinfield - UG Law and Spanish
I choose to study at Sheffield, firstly because the University has an excellent reputation and secondly due to the fact that it is a fantastic city. When I first visited Sheffield, on the opening day, I was immediately impressed by the warm welcome I received from current students and from the lecturers, and I knew this was where I wanted to study...

Stephen Hook - UG Medicine
Sheffield offered me a range of both academic and social opportunities. I wanted to be able to join societies which shared my interests and also I looked for a good student support system. Its high academic ranking was one of the key factors which drew me here, and coming round on open day really secured the fact in my mind that this is where I wanted to go. The only problem was...

Sarah Watson - UG English and Drama
I chose to come to Sheffield for my studies because I instantly loved the city when I came to visit. I found the atmosphere very friendly and liked the student accommodation, particularly Endcliffe as it seemed to be like a little community. Another bonus was they had the course I particularly wanted to do English and Drama which combines my two favourite A-Level subjects...
Olivia Taylor - UG English Literature
I was worried that when I started looking at Universities in my last year of Sixth Form that I would be unable to find one I felt passionately about attending. However, when I visited Sheffield I instantly felt at home here. I wanted to go to a city university as coming from Manchester I wanted a similar kind of atmosphere. Yet Sheffield seems to encompass the `best of both worlds´...
Alexander Nmai - UG Management
Sheffield University seemed a natural choice for me, a great university within a fantastic location. After attending the open day I knew that Sheffield offered everything that I was looking for in a University. Not only did it combine a highly prestigious academic reputation along with great social events, but also a wide and varied combination of resources and facilities that primarily enhance...
Rebecca Hylton - UG Chemistry and Maths
The University of Sheffield gave me the opportunity to study my favourite subjects – Chemistry and Mathematics – as a dual-Honours Degree in a friendly and supportive environment. Moving away from home to study gave me the opportunity to gain some independence and to see another part of the country. Sheffield is a vibrant industrial city with a diverse mixture of people and societies...

Sean Morley - UG Philosophy
In my search for a university to burden for a few years, I eventually decided upon Sheffield because I'd had some experience with the city before and liked the feel of the place. I'd come here before to see a few gigs and I loved the tram system; I decided there could be no better way to move a human being from one place to another place. However, when I attended on an open day I discovered...

Rosa Sadler - UG English and History
My parents had always talked about Sheffield as a place where they would have liked to have lived. Unfortunately they were never able to. However my brother did come here to university and loved it. That was what first sparked my interest when it came to the time for me to choose a university. I had visited my brother several times and loved the city. Attending university open days just..

Sarah Nixon - UG Engish Literature
When I applied for university, I wasn't really that interested in Sheffield, it seemed far too close to home and I wanted to be as far away as possible. However, when I came and looked around on a whim I completely fell in love with the place! The courses here are completely flexible and modern. This year I've managed to study the intricacies of Mad Max as well as Marlowe. The lecturers...

Jessie Purchase - UG English Literature
I don´t think I have ever been as excited as the time I clicked on the UCAS website during my lunch break at school and saw the words "conditional offer" come up on the screen for the first time. Except perhaps when I got the grades which meant I was actually going to University! As fate would have it Sheffield was the first University to offer me a place and eventually became my first choice...

Rebecca Hyde - UG Biology with Conservation and Biodiversity
Sheffield has an excellent biology department particularly for research prospects. It was also one of the few universities where I could combine my interest of conservation with Biology under the degree Biology with Conservation and Biodiversity. The undergraduate Masters scheme is also something unique and very appealing about Sheffield...
Katie Sumner - UG Biology
There were a number of reasons why Sheffield seemed the perfect place for me to study. Probably the main attraction was the great reputation of both the University and the city itself, both of which I had been told had brilliant social activities and was a great place to live and study. I know a number of people who have attended the University in the past and have thoroughly enjoyed...

Romy Ridge - UG Human Communication Sciences
Sheffield is my hometown, and I wanted to stay here because I was returning to education after a year in the workplace. I felt that the added stress of moving to another city would have a detrimental effect on my studies. I was also impressed by the University´s reputation. Receiving the scholarship meant that I was able to buy myself a laptop and accessories, which I feel is going to have a positive...

Karl Boulton - UG Medicine
Knowing the city for several years, I know just how unique Sheffield is. Sheffield has a vibrant atmosphere offering great night life, abundant sports activities and sits on the border of the natural beauty that is the Peak District National Park. Few places can compete with the academic excellence of Sheffield University or its Union´s amazing reputation in providing some...

Clare Clarke - UG Social Policy and Sociology
As a local mature student, Sheffield is my home town. I am the first person in my family to go to university. I left school at 16. No one in my peer group stayed on at school and went to university. Instead I went to college to pursue a career in hairdressing, soon realising this was not for me. So I embarked on a secretarial path, working at the University of Sheffield for over...

Jack Hands - UG Politics
I chose to come to Sheffield as I was fascinated by its industrial and cultural history, particularly being the home of football! And of course felt a great and unique atmosphere around the city and university when I visited on an open day. The scholarship is an incredibly generous award, and means a great deal to me. It means that the burden of finance is substantially lifted...

Julie Carrell - Abbeydale Trust Scholarship for Engineering
I chose to study at Sheffield University due to the reputation of its engineering department. The course that I am now on also attracted me as it is unique and follows my avid interest in motorsport and the automotive industry, which is the area I hope to take my career in once I graduate.

Originally I decided to apply to Sheffield as I liked the prospectus! When I came to an open day I fell in love with the city and could not imagine going to university anywhere else. I am currently completing an MA with financial help from the Alumni Fund...

Natasha McKeever - PG Political Theory
I felt instantly at home in Sheffield, both in the city and at the University. I found it a friendly, good sized city in a good location.
The scholarship has meant that I was able to do a masters. I loved my subject and really wanted to continue with my studies but as my family are on a low income and I couldn't get a career development loan I thought I simply wouldn't...

Lindsay Saladino - Study abroad student
I have always wanted to study abroad because I knew it would help me grow and excel in whatever I decided to do after college. I have always wanted to come to England and when I was looking at the different universities, everything about Sheffield just seemed perfect. Then I started to research the school and only heard and found good things. I went out on a limb but have thoroughly enjoyed...

Allie Gardner - Study abroad student
I am a junior at Williams College in Massachusetts, USA. I decided to come to Sheffield for my exchange semester in large part because I felt the University´s study abroad program would offer a more authentic international experience than would travelling to another country under the auspices of a program sponsored by an American institution, strictly in support of American students...
