Sheffield Varsity 2012Varsity 2012 flyer

Now in its sixteenth year, the competition sees sports teams from The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University compete against each other through sporting contests. These contests span 30 sports, 67 fixtures and 5 venues with over 1,500 students competing and over 9,000 people supporting them.

Varsity is divided into two competitions; Winter and Summer, with this years’ Winter Varsity having already been won by the University of Sheffield 4-1.

The Summer 2012 varsity takes place between Wednesday 21st and Wednesday 28th March with the football first XI, both men and women playing at Hillsborough, Sheffield Wednesday Football Club stadium on the 28th as the finale.

This year brings the introduction of two new larger venues in to the competition, the Boxing will be taking place in the Octagon Centre on Saturday 24 March and the Rugby Union first team will take to the pitch at Don Valley Stadium on Sunday 25 March. In addition this is the first year that all staff students and alumni are invited to take part in the Sheffield Varsity 10k race.

The Sheffield Varsity 10k – Your chance to contribute to Varsity

The Sheffield Varsity 10k is the first time that students, staff and alumni from The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University are going head to head over 10,000m. There are two universities in Sheffield and on Sunday 25th March 2012 there will be just one winner!

The race will be supporting St Luke’s Hospice and at least £3 from each entry plus 100% of all profits from the race will go directly to the hospice to go towards the £4 million they need each year just to keep supporting people with incurable illnesses in Sheffield.

University of Sheffield 1-3 Sheffield HallamFor the eighth consecutive year, Sheffield Hallam took the Ice Hockey victory in front of a crowd of over 3,500 at the Motorpoint Arena. For a write up on the event see the Forge Media webpage.

The Sheffield Ski Village welcomed 500 supporters for the Winter Varsity Final. The skiers and snowboarders from both institutions had some great races, did some great tricks and showed some great techniques! However Sheffield University took the victory to win Winter Varsity 4-1.
