Facilities

Brand new workshops. Dedicated study space. Wind tunnels and flight simulators. Research centres with industry leaders. At Sheffield you'll have these facilities, and more, to achieve your best and prepare for an exciting future.

Have a look round

Aerospace students are based in the Sir Frederick Mappin building on the engineering campus. Have a look inside the building, see a demo of one of our flight simulators and meet some of Sheffield's engineering students in the video below.

This video is part of an interactive tour of the campus, the city, the Students' Union and accommodation. You decide where you want to go.

Join our video blogger Laurbubble on the full tour.

We've refurbished our undergraduate workshops and project rooms to give you the perfect space to be creative and develop as a professional engineer.

If you want to talk through your ideas and socialise at the same time, just round the corner you'll find our engineering cafe. All the cafes on the engineering campus – and across the University – are on the University wireless network.

World-class research centres

We work closely with global players in the aerospace industry. Rolls-Royce has two research and technology centres here at the University. And we collaborate with Boeing and other aerospace companies in the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre.

You'll get to use these facilities on projects and see the latest innovations first hand. When it comes to your individual project, you could be working alongside industry leaders to solve a real engineering problem.

Flight simulators

We have two state-of-the-art flight simulators to support research and teaching. The CueSim flight simulator has a full six-degree-of-freedom motion platform.

Both simulators use cutting-edge hardware and software to replicate a range of modern flight scenarios.

Wind tunnels

For aerodynamics teaching, we have two large wind tunnels: a 35cm recirculating tunnel and an open circuit tunnel with a 1.2m working section. These can reach speeds up to 40m/s. The measurement facilities include force balances, pressure transducers and a smoke generator for flow visualisation.

You'll learn about aerodynamics and propulsion, including how gas turbines, ramjets and rockets function.

University facilities

Sheffield came top of the Russell Group for student experience in the 2012 Times Higher Survey. You'll have the best Students' Union in the UK on your doorstep, along with outstanding University facilities like our 24-hour study space the Information Commons.

We invest in our buildings across the campus to make sure you have access to the best facilities. Our Students' Union has recently had a £5 million renovation, and we're investing £21 million in the first stage of a major expansion project for the Faculty of Engineering.
